Engineering Tools for Planning and Designing Automation solutions

Fraunhofer IPA presents tools that support end users and system integrators in analyzing, designing and optimizing production and assembly solutions.

In a first step, the automation potential analysis app (APA app) can be used to analyze manual assembly workstations and estimate the savings potential through automation.

If it is a "high-mix-low-volume" assembly, it is recommended to choose a lean automation solution in which, for example, the worker - using the Assemblio SW Suite – is walked through the assembly process for a particular product variant step by step. The software derives the necessary assembly instruction animations directly from the CAD models.

If the APA app recommends human-robot collaboration, IPA’s CARA (Computer-aided Risk Assessment) tool supports the risk assessment for collaborative robot cells and makes it faster, easier and less error-prone. Up to 54% less effort.

During operation, the Robo-Dashcam records how people interact with a collaborative robot cell and thereby trigger safety devices, such as a safe stop. The recorded data is used to check the effectiveness of safety measures and to identify optimization potential in terms of cycle time/performance. Up to 10% higher throughput can be achieved.

For a fully automated solution, the IPA PlanningToolChain supports the design of the automation solution by a) deriving the necessary process steps from CAD models; b) selecting suitable automation components from a library, c) arranging those components their automatically in the available layout, as well as d) visualizing the automation cell using “augmented reality”.
