The standardization of PLC source code is practiced in many companies with a focus on their own machine construction. The structure of the source code is driven by a specific concept of the machine and a particular use case. This presentation introduces the idea of a new approach to implementing machine- and customer-independent source code for Siemens PLC controllers. The vision follows the idea that in the future, it will be the software, rather than the mechanical or electrical design, that will lead the end customer to make an investment decision. The approach also contributes to addressing the skills shortage (competence distribution), optimizing training, and simplifying the onboarding process for external source codes. A close comparison to the Android operating system frees from conventional boundaries and highlights the potential of modern Siemens PLC programming.
